Full English breakfast from Mercadona shelves

A full English from Mercadona is realistic if you know which shelves to hit. British expats in Spain usually need four things the local aisle does not advertise as a set: baked beans, bacon that fries like rashers, cheddar for toast, and a proper mug of tea. Those staples are still easy to find in most stores, though bacon is the Spanish kind rather than back bacon, and some lines come and go.

Heinz baked beans

If there is one tin British shoppers refuse to compromise on, it is baked beans. Mercadona stocks Heinz baked beans in tomato sauce. Warm the tin in a small pan until hot, then serve with toast or next to the bacon.

There is no convincing Hacendado clone for this one. Spanish white beans in tomato are a different dish. Keep two Heinz tins in the cupboard so a weekend fry-up does not depend on a last-minute shop.

Bacon: Spanish rashers, British expectations

British back bacon is rare. What you get is smoked or cured pork that behaves more like streaky rashers once it hits a hot pan.

The everyday option is Hacendado bacon pieces. They are cut for frying rather than for a neat overlay on toast. For proper slices, try La Selva smoked bacon. A step up is Oscar Mayer smoked bacon. That Oscar Mayer pack was not listed with a Canaries price, so if you live on the islands, plan on La Selva or Hacendado instead.

Fry until the fat renders and the edges go brown. Spanish bacon is often sold already smoked, so a hot pan is enough.

Cheddar: cured blocks and melting slices

Mercadona has an own-brand cheddar worth putting in the basket. The block for grating over beans or eating with crackers is Hacendado cheddar (300 g). It is cheddar made in Spain in the broad sense of the word (the name itself is not protected the way West Country Farmhouse Cheddar is).

For toasties and burgers, grab Hacendado cheddar slices (200 g). Both packs are cheaper than an imported wedge at the airport.

Tea: PG Tips or the thrifty cup

A fry-up without tea is just a plate of food. Mercadona still stocks PG Tips. If you drink two strong mugs a day, keep Hacendado black tea as the cheaper weekday option. Brew it properly: kettle to a rolling boil, bag in the mug, then add milk.

Building the plate without a British butcher

Check the aisle before you shop

Mercadona cycles products in and out. Familiar British lines can vanish from one month to the next, so it pays to notice when Heinz or PG Tips is in your local store and to grab extras when you see them.

Cook the beans, fry the bacon until the edges brown, grate a little Hacendado cheddar over the toast, and make the tea strong. For a weekly shop, put Heinz and PG Tips in the basket first; the rest of the plate is ordinary Spanish staples you already know how to buy.
